Grandmothers jewelry box :: essays research papers
My Grandmothers Jewelry Box An item I saw as generally noteworthy and intriguing is my grandmotherââ¬â¢s gems box. This gems box has been a significant item in my life since I was a young lady. At whatever point I look over, fantastic recollections move in my mind of my grandma and me. I decided to expound on this gems box in light of the fact that itââ¬â¢s so critical to me. Since the time I was a little young lady I needed just to resemble my grandma. My grandmotherââ¬â¢s adornments enclose lays on my end table my room. Itââ¬â¢s a finished dull wooden box which contains three unique compartments. One is for accessories and arm bands, the subsequent studs, and the third rings. At the point when you open the top thereââ¬â¢s a young lady moving around and around while flawless music would play. This gems enclose was purchased the 1930ââ¬â¢s when my grandma was just ten. Indeed, even now in the present the gems box looks like new and still so excellent. My grandma begun this assortment with all her motherââ¬â¢s gems from when she was a young lady. Step by step the gems box would top off with such dazzling things, and I would just wish they could be mine. My grandma consistently dressed so wonderfully and what made her stand out most was the adornments she commended her outfit with. At the point when I remained at my grandmotherââ¬â¢s house, spruce up was something I wanted to do, what's more, I did it consistently. I would take a stab at practically every last bit of her gems she claimed and move around the house. As I grew up and my grandma began getting more seasoned, that adornments box implied more to me then simply playing spruce up. I knew how much the gems box intended to my grandma and each time I looked at it, it helps me to remember how delightful my grandma was. At age 80, my grandma died, leaving me the adornments box. This implied more to me then anything. She realized the amount I adored her adornments and Iââ¬â¢m excited to know when I get more established Iââ¬â¢ll have the option to appear them off, in memory of her. Each time I take a gander at the adornments box it brings back affectionate recollections of my grandma and the valuable occasions we had together.

Othello Tragic Hero
As indicated by Aristotle, an appalling legend is a character of honorable status and enormity. He is a man who isn't completely acceptable or altogether detestable, rather, he is a man who in general is acceptable, yet in addition adds to his own demolition by some ethical shortcomings, known as the lethal defect. Aristotle further clarifies that the hero must be overwhelmed by a ââ¬Ëhamartiaââ¬â¢ or awful defect which prompts his ruin. All disasters have a legend with a defect, and in the play Othello, the saint gets changed by his disastrous imperfections of desire and naïveté. Othello is the general in the military of Venice and is enamored with Desdemona. He is a Moor of African plunge, who has ascended through the positions of the Venetian armed force through difficult work and accomplishment in fight. Othello is a social and racial outcast, frequently portrayed as a ââ¬Ëblack ramââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmoorââ¬â¢, and his relationship with Desdemona was not acknowledged by the general public at that point, along these lines bringing about their activities to run off and get hitched. Othello is an honorable figure and in spite of the shade of his skin, was regarded by numerous individuals in the general public. In the play, Othelloââ¬â¢s focal defect is envy, realizing demise and misjudging for a considerable lot of the characters. His blemish of envy was misused by Iago and controlled through numerous coincidental occasions. Othello is a trusting and honorable character and is viewed as Shakespeareââ¬â¢s most sentimental character. Othelloââ¬â¢s vast love for Desdemona makes it terrible for him to think about another man taking a gander at her. Othelloââ¬â¢s lethal imperfection of envy is appeared, as because of his dubious and desirous nature, he thinks everything Iago enlightens him regarding Cassio and Desdemona. Iago utilizes Othelloââ¬â¢s extraordinary love through outrageous control to get Othello increasingly desirous, this can be seen when Othello is gradually beginning to trust Iago, ââ¬Å"Damn her, obscene minx! O, damn her! Come, go with me separated; I will pull back, To outfit me with some quick methods for death For the reasonable fiend. Presently craftsmanship thou my lieutenant. â⬠Othello later blames Desdemona for misleading him, ââ¬Å"O, demon, fallen angel! In the event that that the Earth could overflow with lady's tears, Each drop she falls would demonstrate a crocodile. Out of my sight! â⬠this demonstrates as a shock for Desdemona as despite the fact that she is being dedicated to her better half, he doesn't accept a word she is stating because of his blemish of envy. Othelloââ¬â¢s blemish of desire takes him through a progression of situations, drove by Iago, where he settles on the choices to trust Iagoââ¬â¢s allegations on Desdemona and Cassio. It is then his envy that makes him think Desdemona, and sort out unimportant data that gives him an inappropriate data about his wifeââ¬â¢s unfaithfulness. Iago astutely raises Othelloââ¬â¢s defect in Act 3 Scene 3, cautioning him to be careful with desire, as he bamboozles him about Cassio and Desdemonaââ¬â¢s undertaking, while at the same time endeavoring to play with his psyche, ââ¬Å"O be careful, my master, or envy: It is the green-looked at beast which doth mock The meat it benefits from. Toward the start of the play, when Shakespeare presents Othello as a high-status, honorable man, who is infatuated with his better half Desdemona, the miscreant is promptly brought out, revealing the heroes deadly imperfection of naivety. Iago takes Othelloââ¬â¢s blemish furthering his potential benefit, misdirecting him into accepting that his significant other and his lieutenant are engaging in extramarital relations. To Iagoââ¬â¢s karma, Othello views Iago as a legitimate man who he confides in without a doubt, indicating emotional incongruity in the lines, ââ¬Å"Iago is most honestâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A man he is of genuineness and trustâ⬠. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s utilization of emotional incongruity makes an association between the characters in the play and the crowd. Othelloââ¬â¢s gullible and believing nature permits him to think everything without exception Iago lets him know, notwithstanding of his absence of physical proof, which end up being a savage error. Othelloââ¬â¢s guilelessness likewise brings about the adjustment in his marriage. As Othello begins to trust Iagoââ¬â¢s lies, the connection among Othello and Desdemona changed from aware and minding to harsh and deigning. Othello before long loses all regard for Desdemona and even alludes to her as a prostitute, for engaging in extramarital relations with Cassio while she is hitched. Othelloââ¬â¢s defects of naïveté and envy consolidated brought about his destruction. Another lethal defect Othello had was confiding in individuals without any problem. Othello confided in Iago effectively not long after they met. In spite of the fact that Iago can't be accused for Othelloââ¬â¢s blemishes, he was as yet answerable for planting the seeds in Othelloââ¬â¢s mind. Othello additionally committed an error of permitting Iago to meddle with his brain, planting numerous allegations of his Desdemona and Cassio. Othello love Desdemona, and she generally cherished him. But since of his envy and guilelessness his discourse is compared and his affection executed. After Othello killed Desdemona for selling out his adoration, he understands his bogus allegations of Desdemona and Cassio lastly understands the genuine miscreant to be Iago and slaughters himself. In Othelloââ¬â¢s last discourse in the play, he talks about the double-crossing, regret and of his lost love. Othello can be viewed as a lamentable legend, as his blemishes are the reason for his passing. His lethal defects of naïveté, desire and effectively believing individuals can be viewed as the reason for his demise and others around him. He perceives his defects at long last; anyway it is past the point where it is possible to bring back his significant other, whom he had prior murdered. Iago takes Othelloââ¬â¢s imperfections to further his potential benefit, playing with Othelloââ¬â¢s mind, planting untruths and allegations about Desdemona and Cassio. Iago can be viewed as the lowlife as he couldn't care less about the lives of any other person he has demolished, rather just minding to accomplish his own finishes, by doing whatever important. Aristotles meaning of an appalling saint can be contrasted and the life of Othello, in this way making him a really lamentable legend.

Ethics and Business Law Fundamental rules for interpreting contracts in general, including defense and indemnity, provide that parties have great freedom to assign rights and responsibilities as they see fit, including the right to allocate risk through indemnity and defense provision (Loveman 2010). The parties have the right to impose limitations on the applicability of those provisions. Whether an indemnity or defense applies depends on the initial intent of the parties as expressed in the contract. The contract between Robins and Robins and Casings, Inc. stated in section 14 B.2.a. the remedy for defects in supplies shall be limited to the cost of the parts supplied. With this clearly stated in the contract, Casings, Inc. has the defense of the limitations in the contract. Robins and Robins understood this when the contract was signed and initiated. Regardless of the harm done, Casings, Inc. would only be liable for the costs of the casings to Robins and Robins. Without the contr act stating that Casings, Inc. would be responsible in case of injury, Robins and Robins would be held responsible for the damages. The Role of Women in The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte...
The Role of Women in The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins #65279; Reflecting upon their role in society, women in literature are often portrayed in a position that is dominated by men. Especially in the nineteenth century, women were repressed and controlled by their husbands as well as other male influences. The Yellow Wallpaper, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a story of a woman, her psychological difficulties and her husbands so called therapeutic treatment of her aliments during the late 1800s. The story begins with a young woman and her husband travelling to the country for the summer and for the healing powers of being away from writing which just seems to worsen her condition. Upon reading this intenseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It does not take the form of the traditional symbol of security for the domestic activities of a woman, but it does allow for and contain her change. The house also facilitates her release, accommodating her, her writing and her thoughts. These two activities evolve because of the fact that she is kept in the house. One specific characteristic of the house that symbolizes not only her potential but also her trapped feeling is the window. Traditionally this symbol represents a view of possibilities, but now it also becomes a view to what she does not want to see. Through it she sees all that she could be and everything that she could have. But she says near the end, I dont like to look out of the windows even - there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast. She knows that she has to hide and lie low; she has to creep in order to be a part of society and she does not want to see all the other women who have to do the same because she knows they are a reflection of herself. Most women do not creep by daylight, expresses the fact that they need to hide in the shadows; they try to move without being seen. The window is no longer a gateway for her; she can not enter to the other side of it, literally, because John will not let her, (there are bars holding her in ), but also because that world will not belong to her. She will still be controlled and be forced to stifle her self expression. She will still be forced to creep. Theyââ¬â¢re watching as every single erythrocyte in my body floods to my cheeks, rushes around my nose, and fills my forehead. I imagine itââ¬â¢s like watching a glass fill with tomato juice. The only difference being, I am the glass. I am a very, very transparent glass. For as long as I can remember, the slightest hint of flirting, a compliment, or meeting someone new has always painted my face a very obvious shade of red. And it was crippling. Especially when I got to high school, I would hold back from introducing myself to new people or starting a conversation with a cute boy or looking someone in the eye as they said something kind and flattering. We will write a custom essay sample on Flushed or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I didnââ¬â¢t want them to get the wrong vibe from the process of my face turning the cute shade of an Exit sign. Iââ¬â¢m not even a shy person. Iââ¬â¢m not socially awkward; I just blush a lot. I love volunteering in class, reading out loud, and conversing with new people when weââ¬â¢re given group assignments, but I donââ¬â¢t love that I look like I am running a marathon while doing so. My senior year presented me with amazing opportunities. I started an internship where I bring patients into exam rooms and ask them questions about their health, take their vital signs, and prepare them to be seen by their physician. I took a class called Honors Advanced Writing, where sharing essays out loud was required. I also started to get a modest amount of attention from local sports websites, where I was interviewed about my team and our success. These opportunities forced me to confront my blushing head on. There was no way I was going to let this internship slip through my fingers because I was worried about giving a patient a weird vibe. So what if I was blushing while taking their pulse? I wouldnââ¬â¢t allow myself to do poorly in Honors Advanced Writing due to fear that the class would judge me if I blushed while reading my essay. Thatââ¬â¢s my GPA weââ¬â¢re talking about! And it would be so petty of me to decline interviews for my team because I was embarrassed of blushing on camera or in front of the interviewers. I wasnââ¬â¢t going to let a few million red blood cells ââ¬â however embarrassing they may be ââ¬â hinder my growth and learning. I dove into all those high school sports interviews with a vermilion face because I was proud to show off my team and our athletic success. I took all those patientsââ¬â¢ blood pressure while my own skyrocketed and asked them all about their rash ointment because I want to be a nurse. And I read all of my Honors Writing essays out loud in front of my classmates because I care about my grade. As a freshman I would avoid any hallway that might contain an attractive male, to spare myself the transformation from girl to pomegranate-with-limbs. Now when guys introduce themselves to me, I just say, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Shannon, and I blush a lot.â⬠Some laugh. Others tell me itââ¬â¢s cute, so I blush some more and start a conversation so they donââ¬â¢t assume Iââ¬â¢m blushing because Iââ¬â¢m shy. Yes, I still blush all the time, but because of the opportunities Iââ¬â¢ve had during my senior year, Iââ¬â¢ve learned to never hold back because of fear or worry that I will be judged for it. Besides, everyone loves a natural glow.

Femicide in Guatemala free essay sample
Femicide in Guatemala ââ¬Å"Six women and girls were killed in Guatemala last week in one day alone. Two of the girls, about 6 and 12 years old, were found strangled to death in a street in the capital Guatemala City wearing their pajamasâ⬠(Moloney 1). Guatemala has the third highest rate of Femicide in the world. Femicide is defined as the killing of a woman by a man because she is a female. In Guatemala, a significantly high number of femicide cases have been reported and I strongly believe that this is a very troublesome and unhealthy issue for the population. More than 3800 females have been murdered in Guatemala since the year 2000 and this is just the official number. This clearly suggests that numerous innocent women are tortured and killed by men each day throughout the region. Another report suggests that 512 women were killed between January 1 and October 16 in the year 2012 alone and this is after a 10 percent decline from the previous year. We will write a custom essay sample on Femicide in Guatemala or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (PCUSA, 1) Most of these cases were reported in the province of Guatemala, which includes the countryââ¬â¢s largest city and capital. The fact that this number is still so high despite the drop suggests what an urgent issue this is. There are various reasons for this violent victimization of women throughout Guatemala and is becoming an increasingly pressing issue which needs serious attention. It has been reported that this region is one of the unsafe areas in the world for women. Each day countless women are raped, mutated, forced into sexual slavery and abortions, sterilized and murdered. This creates a sense of fear among the entire population and makes them more submissive to this brutality. Men and women throughout the country live their lives in immense anxiety and stress of losing the women that they love. One of the main concerns regarding femicide is impunity, meaning that most of these cases are not brought to trial. Reports suggest that only 1%-2% of femicide cases are prosecuted whereas criminals have a 98% to 99% chance of completely escaping any punishment or prosecution. This poses a huge problem because women donââ¬â¢t get the justice that they deserve and criminals easily escape. This is very unfair for the innocent women who are victims of such crimes because their offenders donââ¬â¢t receive the punishment that they deserve. Another main reason for this exigent issue is the inability of the Guatemalan authorities to ensure the safety of women. This is to say that the Guatemalan government is so corrupt that they are unable to provide security for women and with the extremely high rate of impunity it is almost impossible for women to find justice. Now, it is very important to understand why these gender specific crimes exist in the region. One of the main reasons for this violent targeting of women goes back to the ââ¬Å"Guatemalan government and militaryââ¬â¢s 36 year old genocidal counterinsurgency campaign against the countryââ¬â¢s Mayan populationâ⬠(Mychalejko 1). This is to say that the reason behind this problem of femicide exists to destroy the intricate social bonds of Mayan communities. Additionally, ââ¬Å"Gender violence not only terrorizes women in the community, but it also disrupts traditional patriarchal gender relations by sending the message to men that they are not capable of protecting womenâ⬠(Mychalejko 1). I find this medium of using gender violence to target an indigenous population very disappointing. It is not ethical for a population to kill thousands of women in order to get even with a community. Further, it is believed that this harsh behavior against women is really effecting the male population because such incidents happen so frequently that they are becoming insensitive to such incidents. Men in the Guatemalan society have become normalized to such reports and this can be seen because the crimes are continuing to become more inhumane and frequent. As mentioned above, one of the primary reasons for this ongoing violence against women is the Guatemalan Civil war, which left behind harsh memories of violence and impunity. The increased militarization cause by the ongoing war on drugs also continues to contribute to these high femicide rates. Guatemala is one of the regions strongly involved in the drug trade and thus women are used as collateral damage in the battle between gangs. Additionally, the economic and political climate in the region is not very stable and thus the land a resource conflict also contributes to these innocent deaths. Lastly, it has also been found that the increased involvement of foreign governments, especially US and Canada play an important role in this violence targeted to women. Basically, the Guatemalan government uses the targeting of women as a ââ¬Å"tactical and deliberate tool of political repression (Mychalejko 2). In my personal opinion, not only is this very disturbing but it is also very unfair. Women play an important role in building a society and this unnecessary violence against them is very alarming. Using women as a bait to target the bigger economic and political issues is unethical and should not be practiced by any government. It is impossible for women to find hope and justice in a society where such high impunity exists. This continues to be a never-ending cycle for thousands of innocent women who lose their lives, while the people responsible are let free. Overall this is an absolute shame and mockery of the system. The Guatemalan civil war really contributes to these high rates of gender violence in the country. The aftermath of the war left more than 200,000 Guatemalans murdered, most of who were indigenous. Also, thousands were raped, tortured, disappeared and displaced. The most disappointing part however, is that over 98 percent of the people who engaged in these war crimes were left free. It is this lack of justice that left criminals in the country in power and innocent victims hurt. Therefore, these high rates of femicide are to inform the local population about this harsh past and to remind them that justice has not yet come. In conclusion, I think that we must all focus our attention to this increasing issue of femicide in Guatemala. In the recent times, as the political repression against women in increasing, they are becoming more active in order to prevent femicide. For example, ââ¬Å"In Guatemala it has been proven that as more women participate politically and socially, it brings out more repression. An example is the recent attempt on the life of [the aforementioned anti-mining activist] Yolanda Oqueliâ⬠(Mychalejko 3). Yolanda is a leader of FRENAM, a movement that aims to defend land from expansion activities. She was returning home from a peaceful protest when she was shot. I believe that this issue of femicide is one that needs immediate attention. It is absolutely wrong and immoral to use a countryââ¬â¢s women as a way of gaining political control. Additionally, the Guatemalan government is extremely corrupted and has a very high rate of impunity, which in turn, allows criminals to go free and possibly even commit the crime again. I suggest that the citizens of the world acknowledge this and do an intervention throughout the region. It is high time that women not be used as a bait to target men or to settle past scores. Women are an integral part of any society and deserve respect and security.

The 8 Best Jobs for Teens and How to Find Yours
The 8 Best Jobs for Teens and How to Find Yours SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Looking to gain a little more independence and real-world experience? Hoping to develop some useful professional skills? Getting a job as a teenager is a great way to work towards these goals. In this post, I'll talk a little bit about why you should (or shouldn't) get a job, before telling you what you should be looking for in your first part-time position. Read to the end for tips strategies on finding the best job for you! Why Should You Get a Job as a Teen? Maybe you're still deciding whether you want to jump into the world of employment; maybe you've made up your mind that getting a job is definitely right for you. No matter where you stand, I hope you read this section carefully - if you get a job for the wrong reasons, you might end up being counter-productive in the long run. Many students think it's important to get a job for the sake of their college applications. It's great to demonstrate that you can juggle different responsibilities and that you participate in activities outside of school. Keep in mind that admissions officers would rather see strong academic performances than mediocre performance + a part-time job. For this reason, I think jobs can be really great during the summer when you have a lot of free time - you can gain employment experience while also bringing in your own personal income. Working part-time while school is in session is a different story. Many students do really well in school with a part-time job, but there are more variables to consider. Namely, you have to think about prioritizing your other day-to-day responsibilities: school and homework, extracurricular activities, family, and friends. If you can balance these priorities in addition to a part-time job, go for it! If you're struggling to keep up your grades and other activities, however, you'll benefit much more in the long run by focusing on academics than you would by working part-time. It's important to find that balance between school, work, and fun. One important exception to this reasoning is if you need to get a job for financial or familial reasons. If circumstances necessitate that you work part-time while you're in school, and this negatively impacts your grades, it's important that you explain these circumstances on any college or scholarship applications. Now that we've got that out of the way - on to the fun stuff! What Should You Be Looking For in a Teen Job? Chances are you won't be making a ton of money as a teen in an entry-level position. Everyone has to start somewhere, though, and if you're thoughtful about what sort of job you want, you'll be able to get a lot out of your first employment experience. I've come up with a list of skill development areas that should generalize to many jobs (and other aspects of your life as well). You don't have to look for a job withall of the qualities I'm about to list, but here are some possible job skills benefits to consider. Think about which job qualities are most important to you: Responsibility Will people be depending on you? Is it important that you adhere to a regimented schedule, or that you complete a series of tasks or projects in order for things to function smoothly? If yes, you can expect that a particular job will help you develop a strong sense of responsibility, which is a great quality to develop as a teen. Now, most jobs will require you to demonstrate some degree of responsibility. What will ultimately vary among jobs is what you're supposed to be responsiblefor. Here's a general guide to the responsibility hierarchy that you'll find applies to most jobs: Responsible for listening to directions completing tasks Responsible for yourself - that is, doing your job without being told Responsible for taking initiative - anticipate what needs to be done, complete tasks effectively without explicit direction Responsible for other people - direct, teach, and train others. In most entry level positions, you'll start off at the lower end of this hierarchy. Some people prioritize opportunities to gain more responsibility and autonomy - do you? People Skills People skills development is a great advantage of customer service jobs (think working in a restaurant or retail store).Anyone whoââ¬â¢s worked in customer service can tell you that youââ¬â¢ll encounter less-than-pleasant people, but you'll also have awesome one-on-one experiences with great customers. Any future jobs or career options will appreciate that you can work well with people, even (especially) difficult individuals. Teamwork Collaboration Some jobs are pretty solitary - you might be interacting with others in a service capacity (for example, as a checkout clerk), but you won't be collaborating with your coworkers much. Jobs where it is important to develop a sense of community, or where you work with coworkers on projects, help build your teamwork skills. Jobs that emphasize collaboration and community can be especially valuable for your resume and college applications. You'll be hard pressed to find a future employer who doesn't highly value a team player. Leadership Growth Potential Youââ¬â¢ll find leadership growth potential in positions where you get more responsibility and/or autonomy once youââ¬â¢ve proven yourself. For example, in a restaurant, there might be opportunities to work your way up from busboy to waiter. In a retail environment, you could move from sales associate to shift manager. This upward trajectory comes from hard work and a demonstration of initiative, and usually accompanies pay raises and a fancier job title. This will help you both in future job searches and in your college applications. Additionally, you'll sure get a healthy dose of self-satisfaction that comes with being rewarded for your hard work. Professional Development This one might be a bit more difficult to find in an entry-level job for teens, but itââ¬â¢s definitely possible. By professional development, I mean developing interests, passions, and network connections based on your future career interests in a particular field. For example, if youââ¬â¢re interested in going to veterinary school, you might seek out work or volunteer positions at local animal shelters. If youââ¬â¢re interested in the hospitality industry, you could look for hostess jobs at local restaurants or front desk positions at hotels or inns. If youââ¬â¢re interested in research, check out labs at local universities for part-time research assistant positions. The possibilities are endless and really depend on your own unique interests and skills. 8 Great Jobs for Teens and Where to Find Them Now that we've gone through important job characteristics, I'll list some ideas for the best jobs for teens, along with corresponding job skills strategies. This list is by no means exhaustive, however, so if you have your own ideas about part-time jobs you'd like, I encourage you to do your own research and check them out! Don't worry if you have to send out many applications before getting a call for an interview; that's pretty typical for a job search. Rape in the Military Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Rape in the Military - Essay Example 340). Women are not immune to rape even within their rank and file of the U.S. military which state of affairs will be the subject of discussion in the rest of this paper. Recent CBS news of dt January 27, 2013 reports the rampant rape incidents in the U.S. military where 15 percent of personnel are women. A newly recruited 24 year old in the Air Force has been raped in her unconscious state by her recruiting officer in party she had been called in to meet her fellow soldiers. As she had to drive her car, she did not take alcohol. But her officer had put some intoxicating substance in her soft drinks. She has not made a complaint for fear of losing her job. Her new superior officer has been making sexual advances towards her which she hesitates to report to her commander who happens to be the friend of her superior. The woman cannot easily quit the military without the help of her commanders. There is no severe deterrent punishment for rape and other sex crimes within the military un like in the civilian world. The U.S. Air Forceââ¬â¢s own data shows that there were 790 incidents of sexual assaults and harassment by the members of the Air Force in the last year as against 614 in the previous year. In the Army, there were 1,695 cases and in Navy and Marines 883 cases in 2011 involving male members attacking women members. Only 25 percent of the sexual attack incidents in the military are reported and according to the official estimates, there are 19,000 such incidents occurring every year. Forty percent of victims hold men in higher ranks responsible and they come from their chain of command. General Mark Welsh, the Chief of Air Force has vowed to bring down the number to zero rather than lowering the number. 6- Air Force Attorneys have been designated to deal with the complaints. Although the Pentagon set up in 2004 Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) to contain sexual assault in the military, the crime incidents have not come down but only have been increasing. There are proposals to make legislation to have the investigations taken out of the purview of the military chain of command (Herbert, 2012). Military personnel continue indulging in rape both within and outside as well as in wartimes and peacetimes. A report says that two US naval sailors have been convicted for raping a Japanese woman in October, 2012 while she was walking alongside a street in Okinawa US military base in Japan Both in their early twenties have been sentenced with 10 year and nine year imprisonment respectively. This is a case of US forces committing the crime in Japan (Anonymous, 2013). This is a repeat of a 1995 incident involving a 12 year old Japanese girl who was raped by the US military personnel in Okinawa (Smith, 2004). The fact is that military personnel involved in rape of women within the military are unlikely to be punished and there are 86.5 % chance of the crime being swept under the carpet and 92 % chance of court-martial being avoided. Victims often do not make complaints due to the prevailing culture of acceptance in the US military, fewer prosecutions and the chain of command they have to report through. Women in the military who succeed in obtaining punishment to the military rapists are forced to leave the military service because of harassment in investigation and prosecution(Speier, 2012). No military woman who has been raped can approach a medical facility for treatment as well as for evidence

Multiple Intelligence Essay Example for Free
Multiple Intelligence Essay 1) How would you compare and contrast constructs of intelligence and achievement? Though often linked with each other, intelligence and achievements are neither the same thing nor does possessing intelligence automatically results in a person being an achiever. Intelligence is only a part of the entire package and process that allows one to reach his or her goals. Success or achievements are met with the mixture of intelligence, hard work, and the right opportunities. At the same time, a person may have the passion and the willingness to work for a particular goal, but still not make it. One still needs the inborn talent that will enable him or her to do the work needed. Thus, intelligence is one of the many yet essential factors for achieving. It may be inborn, but it still needs to be developed to its full extent. If intelligence goes un-nurtured, then it is useless. Oneââ¬â¢s environment and learning are interdependent with oneââ¬â¢s genes for the development of his or her intelligence, and ultimately with his or her capability to achieve. 2) How would you describe Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory of intelligence? Do you agree with Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory of multiple intelligences? Why or why not? Gardner believed that intelligence is multi-faceted and flexible. He attacked the idea that intelligence is a single immutable entity created by just one source and is easily measurable with math and language IQ tests (Smith, 2008; Benson, 2003). Gardner proposed humans have seven types of intelligence: ââ¬Å"linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal kinds of intelligenceâ⬠(Smith, 2008, n.p.). I agree with Gardner that there is no single, accurate way of measuring peopleââ¬â¢s intelligence because people have different talents or intelligence. Humans have their own unique mix of intelligence; they may excel in areas where others do not and vice versa. Gardnerââ¬â¢s theory does not limit intelligence into a single box. I believe that to be true since it is unfair to judge a kind of talent as better as or more rewarding than others. People ought to know that there are different realms of intelligence. They ought to realize theirs for the sake of forming their personality, building up confidence, and nurturing their competence. Gardner wrote that people need to know what they can do to understand themselves and live productively and effectively (cited in Smith, 2008). In conclusion, Gardner recognizes that there is no single construct of intelligence. Intelligence goes beyond classrooms and report cards, and this, I think, is the most important for people to understand.

The Ethics of Stem Cell Research Essay -- Ethics
While some people might say that stem cell research is immoral and unethical, others believe that it is a magical solution for almost any problem, thus leading to a very controversial issue. Scientists have been searching for years for ways to eradicate incurable diseases and perform other medical procedures that yesterday's technology would not fix. With the rapidly arising, positive research on stem cell technology, the potential that exists to restore any deficiency is in the same way, likely to destroy humanity. America is suffering from its inability to choose who holds precedence over this issue. Too many of us find it impossible to reach a basis for which our differing opinions can be shared and formed into a universal and comprehensive understanding. Although stem cell research is portrayed as being a means, it can also be viewed as an ends for those who suffer today, and for those in the future who will be exposed to this suffering. As the latest research on stem cells has been presented, the message that is inferred is that the public should remain out of the spotlight because they are not clever enough to know what is beneficial to them. As one scientist claims, stem cell research is "Hope for the helpless! Science as savior" (qtd. in Peters and Bennett 184). The belief of science as "savior" has become so intense and desired by these researchers, that "faith in this research has come to resemble a secular religion...and as a bellow to blow the political winds in their favor" (qtd. in Peters and Bennett). But one may argue that the derivation of cells from a human embryo is against their conservative beliefs, and that that embryo is a living person who has rights that protect its dignity. In addition... ...s promises dramatic medical benefits, it treats future problems as ends for which supporting research today becomes a means for relieving those sufferings. Allowing medical technologies to continue will be the only tool for accomplishing this. Works Cited Bennett, Gaymon Jr., Peters, Ted. Gender Socialization and Consumer Culture
An article ââ¬Å"A ââ¬ËReal Man's Ring': Gender and the Invention Traditionâ⬠by Vicki Howard (2003) published in the Journal of Social History defined the role of gender stereotypes, their development and changes in forming consumer culture through describing the invention and adoption of double ring ceremony in twentieth century America.Howard tells the history of groomsââ¬â¢ wedding bands and double ring ceremony, explaining the bonds between economical, cultural and social aspects of the first sixty years of the twentieth century. The author explained that the double ring ceremony emerged because of the cultural tendency in family life Howard called ââ¬Å"masculine domesticityâ⬠, when, in the middle of twentieth century, spending time with wife and kids, performing household chores became ââ¬Å"synonymous with prosperity, capitalism, and national stabilityâ⬠. In fiftieth the new type of family became widespread, à a so called ââ¬Å"companionate marriageà ¢â¬ , where both spouses shared responsibility for psychological and emotional well-being of their family, and a double ring ceremony reflected these new type of relationship.Howard adds that World War Two made double rings wedding custom even more popular, as than it had to do with ââ¬Å"wartime sentimentsâ⬠. Wedding ring symbolized ties a soldier had with his wife, with his family and kids; it was a sign for him that someone was waiting for him at home, a symbol of everything he defended. à And, according to Howardââ¬â¢s writing, while in 1940 two rings wedding hadnââ¬â¢t been a custom, à in yet in late fortieth-early fiftieth it appeared in the wedding ceremonies held by Catholic, Unitarian, Baptist, and Methodist churches, the most influential ones.Getting man used to the thought that grooms wedding ring was a good idea took lots of time and efforts from the sellers. Howard described some of the techniques that were used by U.S jewelry stores, like establishing a separate ââ¬Å"groom roomâ⬠for men not to feel embarrassed when shopping for wedding rings; the other idea was to hide grooms rings in slide drawers beneath the feminine rings, and showing them only after brideââ¬â¢s rings had been already purchased. Meantime, years passed, and social apprehension of man wedding rings changed due to numerous advertising campaigns, Hollywood productions, marriages of public persons etc.Of course there were other factors that played their role in popularization of double ring ceremony. One of the crucial ones was the ââ¬Å"teenage marriage boomâ⬠, which began in fortieth, when the average age of marrying has lowered dramatically.Howard supposed that having a double ring ceremony was important for young couples to differentiate them from their parents. Wearing a ring helped young girl to feel herself protected, not being afraid to become an old maid, while for man wedding ring was the proof of maturity, masculinity, ability to suppor t his wife, and, what was also important, heterosexuality.Howard noted that one more factor to conduce the popularity of double ring ceremony was emergence of middle class in the U.S. People moved to suburbs, where they could allow purchasing a house. As economy grew more, more people earned enough money to provide their families with all the middle-class attributes. This period was characterized by ââ¬Å"physical and psychological separation of public and privateâ⬠, of work and family, and double ring ceremony became a symbol of the new family, built in that environment. The situation was different for working class. Men often were dissatisfied with the idea to wear a ring, as it symbolized the obligations they took, while for women grooms ring was a sign of claim bride has for her husband.
